DC DUI Law Enforcement Joint Task Force
The District of Columbia is now ramping up DUI enforcement by partnering with other law enforcement agencies. The MPD is the District's chief law enforcement agency, but Secret Service, Capitol Police, Park Police, and others can arrest drivers on suspicion for DUI.
About the Joint Task Force
DC Police are entering into agreements with police from Maryland, Virginia and feds including Park Police, US Capitol Police & Secret Service to launch a real time crime center at MPD HQ where police will monitor surveillance cameras 24/7 365 days a year. Officials claim they're doing this because of a crime spike in the District. There have been over 200 homicides in D.C. in 2023, we're told that 70% of those cases remain unsolved.
What Does that Mean for DC DUI Defense
In a nutshell, it means you need experienced representation. With police apparently sitting around a central camera hub 24 hours a day to surveil the public, you won't want an attorney who doesn't know their way around a courtroom. As daunting as it may sound, this Joint Task Force can lead to great defensive opportunities. If you are innocent of charges, demanding that the Task Force produce evidence can help your case. For example, in a DC DUI, the cop might say he saw you swerving but the Task Force footage might show that you were not. If the prosecution has Joint Task Force evidence and they do not turn it over, your case could get dismissed if the Court sanctions the prosecution for failing to obey discovery laws.
