6th Grader Punished For Doing the Right Thing...Too Slowly

Posted by Sheridan England | Sep 15, 2024 | 0 Comments

According to this REPORT, a 6th grader got suspended because he didn't tell school officials FAST ENOUGH that another kid brought a bullet to school.

There's a lot going on here.

First, kudos to this 10 or 11 year old for saying something.  We can't imagine how awkward that must be for a child to tell on someone for bringing ammunition to school.

Second, not so many kudos to the school for suspending the kid.  First, the kid did the right thing.  Second, the kid identified a problem that the school missed.  Third, the kid was suspended for the same amount of time as the bullet toting kid.

In part of their official statement, the school said "we expect students to bring safety issues to the attention of school staff immediately, and our school safety policies cement this expectation.”

The official statement is all well and good, but to punish a kid for not acting fact enough?  One can only wonder whether next time a do gooder kid won't say anything and pretend that they didn't see anything because they're afraid they'll get in trouble.
